Petra tou Romiou, internationally known as Aphrodite’s Rock, is one of the most famous and breathtaking coastal landmarks in the Mediterranean. According to ancient Greek mythology, this sea stack is the very place where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and eternal youth, emerged from the sea foam. The legend says Uranus, the personification of the sky, was castrated by his son Cronus, and his remains fell into the sea here, giving rise to sea foam from which the goddess arose. She was then escorted in a giant scallop shell by the Zephyrs (west winds) to the sandy shores of Cyprus, establishing the island as her sacred sanctuary.
The name "Petra tou Romiou" translates to "Rock of the Greek" in Greek. This name is linked to another local legend from the Byzantine era, concerning the legendary hero Basil (Digenis Akritas). It is said that Basil threw a massive rock from the Troodos Mountains into the sea to block raiding Saracen ships, creating the famous sea stack we admire today. The combination of these classical and medieval legends gives this stretch of coastline a deeply mystical atmosphere.

However, the open sea here has strong undercurrents and waves can be powerful, breaking directly against the rocks. Swimmers should exercise extreme caution, especially during windy days, and avoid climbing the rocks as the wet limestone is very slippery.

Petra tou Romiou is located approximately 25 km east of Kato Paphos and 20 km from Paphos International Airport (PFO). The scenic B6 coastal highway takes you directly to the location, offering beautiful coastal vistas along the way. Visitor Facilities & Parking: There is a tourist pavilion, a gift shop, and a café located on the landward side of the main road. Visitors can safely access the beach by walking through a pedestrian underpass that runs beneath the B6 highway, avoiding any need to cross the fast-moving road.
